Maths checking: what is involved in maths checking?

Everybody has a strength, and mine is maths. I just love it. I have never been happier than when working through a calculation, and I get the right answer. Here is a contents list of what is covered in my blog.

What does maths checking include?

What factors make the price go up and down?

What can I expect for my money?

What does maths checking include?

Maths checking is checking the mathematical content of a document similar to proofreading is checking the word content of a document. For example, proofreading checks the words and maths checking checks the calculations, data, graphs, tables, algebra etc.

For a publisher, maths checking could include checking the mathematical content of a primary teaching resource for maths. I could check if the maths is the appropriate level for the age group, check the calculations are correct and that the overall learning progresses.

Maths mastery reasoning

For example, I completed maths checking of an online primary learning module for a publisher. I worked through the finished online module as a child would, call it a test run. I worked out all the answers and checked they were marked correctly. I checked the feedback for each answer to ensure it was correct and guided the children in the right direction to improve their maths.

Another example, I completed maths checking of an online A-Level maths course for a school. I worked through the teaching aspects of the module to check it was at an appropriate level and flowed effectively to teach the content. Then I worked through the practice questions, homework and mark schemes to ensure the students had a good learning experience to allow for progression, and the teachers had an accurate document to mark the work.

For an independent author, maths checking may include maths checking certain sections of the book, such as the tables of the findings, checking the numbers all add up. It could include checking the graphs and research for clarity and accuracy. They may also require a full proofread to go alongside the maths checking.

What factors make the price go up and down?

A quote for a maths checking project is based on the size of the document you need checking, the level of complexity and how soon you need it. I charge per hour for maths checking as every project is different and couldn't be based just on size. If I charged per words and one content was primary level, for example, calculations such as 4 + 6 and the other content was A-Level dividing algebraic equations, there would be a massive difference in how long it would take me to do each project. So I look at the size of the project and then factor in the difficulty of the level of maths and how long it would take me to check it.

Also, I factor in how soon you need the project completing. If you need the project finished with a short deadline and that will involve me working over weekends and evenings, I will charge double my usual rate.

What can I expect for my money?

A professional service by an experienced maths checker. I have a maths degree, and I have worked in education teaching maths. I have experience maths checking every level of maths from primary to degree level, and I am highly skilled. I will ensure your maths project is accurate. A thorough check for clear progression and appropriate content. I will cross check content, ensuring it portrays the correct quality.
